Beyond Individual Stems: Chart-Wide Patterns
While knowing your Day Master type and Ten Gods is essential, experienced Bazi practitioners look at something larger: chart-wide structural patterns. These are the recurring "shapes" that a Bazi chart can take, and they reveal the overarching narrative of your life — whether you're destined to be a powerful leader, a creative maverick, a follower who thrives under a strong structure, or someone whose chart demands unusual flexibility. Understanding what kind of chart pattern you have provides the highest-level insight into your Bazi destiny.
Strong vs. Weak Day Master: The Fundamental Division
The first and most important pattern classification is whether your Day Master is strong (身强) or weak (身弱). This is determined by analyzing:
- Season of birth: Each element is strongest in its own season. A Wood Day Master born in spring (Wood season) is inherently strong. A Fire Day Master born in winter is inherently weak.
- Support from other stems and branches: How many stems produce or share the Day Master's element versus how many control or drain it.
- Earthly Branch root: Does the Day Master have a root (hidden stem of the same element) in the Earthly Branches? A Day Master with a strong root in the Month Branch is significantly stronger.
Strong Day Masters can handle — and actually need — controlling and draining energies (Officer, Wealth, and Output stars) to achieve balance. Without them, a strong chart becomes "overly robust" — stubborn, inflexible, and unable to adapt or produce results. Strong Day Masters often become leaders and achievers when their charts include enough "burden" to carry.
Weak Day Masters need support — Resource and Companion stars that strengthen them. A weak Day Master with favorable Resource stars can be incredibly successful, often achieving through study, mentorship, and strategic alliances rather than brute force independence. If a weak chart lacks support, the person may struggle with confidence, health, or life direction.
Balanced Charts (身旺, Standard Pattern)
A balanced chart is one where the Day Master has moderate strength and the Five Elements are reasonably distributed without extreme dominance or absence. This is the most common pattern and generally indicates a well-rounded life — the person can succeed in multiple domains, adapts well to different Luck Pillars, and doesn't have the extreme highs and lows of more specialized chart types. If the standard chart were a personality, it would be the "generalist" — capable rather than narrowly brilliant, steady rather than dramatic.
Follow-the-Leader Patterns (从格)
One of the most fascinating and frequently misunderstood patterns in Bazi is the Follow-the-Leader (从格, Cong Ge) structure. This occurs when the Day Master is extremely weak — so weak that supporting it is futile — and one dominant element in the chart becomes the de facto "leader." Instead of trying to strengthen the Day Master (which is impossible), the chart "follows" the dominant energy.
Types of Follow Patterns:
- Follow Wealth (从财格): Wealth stars dominate. The person is naturally drawn to business, finance, and material success. They thrive by "following" money and opportunity.
- Follow Officer (从官杀格): Officer stars dominate. These individuals excel in highly structured environments — military, law enforcement, corporate hierarchies. They need authority and discipline to function well.
- Follow Output (从儿格): Output stars dominate. The person is creatively gifted and must express themselves. Conventional career paths feel suffocating; art, performance, or entrepreneurship is essential.
- Follow Strong (从强格): The Day Master and its supporting elements are overwhelmingly dominant. This is not a "weak" follower but a hyper-specialized strong chart. The person has an almost singular identity tied to their Day Master element.
The key insight with Follow patterns: the person must not resist their fate. If a Follow Wealth chart enters a Luck Pillar that brings Resource stars (which would normally be "favorable" for a weak Day Master), it can actually create disaster because it disrupts the following dynamic. Follow charts require precise Luck Pillar alignment to flourish.
Special Formations: Transformation and Combination Charts
Sometimes the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches combine to transform the Day Master's element entirely. This is called a Transformation (化格) pattern. For example, if a Jia (Yang Wood) Day Master meets an Earthly Branch combination that produces Fire, and enough Fire energy accumulates, the chart may transform into a Fire chart — the Jia no longer acts like Wood but like Fire. These charts are rare and produce individuals whose lives take dramatic turns or who have dual-natured personalities.
Common Structural Styles (格局)
Within standard charts, practitioners also identify structural styles based on which Ten God dominates the Month Pillar:
- Direct Officer Structure (正官格): The Month Branch contains a strong Direct Officer. Career, reputation, and social standing are central life themes. These individuals are often well-respected and climb conventional ladders.
- Seven Killings Structure (七杀格): Bold, competitive, and often facing significant obstacles that forge character. These charts produce fighters — in business, law, or literal combat.
- Eating God Structure (食神格): Talent, creativity, and enjoyment dominate. These are the artists, chefs, and natural entertainers of the Bazi world.
- Hurting Officer Structure (伤官格): Brilliant but rebellious. Often found in the charts of inventors, revolutionaries, and those who break molds. These charts need careful management to avoid self-sabotage.
- Direct/Indirect Wealth Structure (正财格 / 偏财格): Financially oriented charts. Direct Wealth brings steady accumulation; Indirect Wealth brings entrepreneurial flair and higher risk-reward dynamics.
What Your Chart Pattern Means for Real Life
Chart patterns are not a ranking system — a Follow Wealth chart is not "better" than a balanced chart. Each pattern comes with its own optimal strategy for living. A balanced chart gives flexibility; a Follow pattern gives extreme specialization; a Hurting Officer structure gives creative genius with a risk of self-destruction. The wisest use of this knowledge is to align your life choices with your chart's structural tendencies rather than trying to be something your chart doesn't support. When you work with your pattern instead of against it, life flows. When you resist it, every step feels like swimming upstream.
